Deloitte Digital was buzzing as members of Service Design DC joined with Deloitte practitioners to share in the spirit and energy of the discipline.

Service Design DC and Deloitte present a Cannes film festival of their own to celebrate Service Design Day.

The night’s events started with the usual revelry over drinks, tacos, and delightful conversation. Service Design DC leaders Lisa Mendelow and Deloitte's own Jeneanne Rae opened the film and keynote session with a few welcome remarks to both the established designers in attendance and the many new faces sprinkled in the audience.

The crowd was then engrossed in the keynote content for the evening, a video primer on Nordic Service Design and a recorded talk on Scaling Service Design for Government by Louise Downe, a design leader in the UK government and contributor to the UK.gov Service Manual, an encapsulating reference point for public sector service design principles.

The group also watched The Designer’s Weakness, a SXSW talk from George Aye of Greater Good Studios discussing the “mechanics of power” and how to carefully wield it to influence the success of projects. There was no shortage of lively discussion about the videos from the audience, ranging from American vs. Nordic ideals and their effects on design processes to how the UK model of service design can navigate the increasingly disparate landscape of the U.S government.

The Service Design Day movie night at Deloitte was a true success in engaging the D.C. area community about this up and coming, human-centric design discipline while sharing in good friends, good food, and good laughs. Thank you to Service Design D.C., the Service Design Network, and all those who came out to learn and share their perspectives. We’ll see you next time!

This issue of Touchpoint answers an ongoing need in our community to learn from each other - as well as those outside our field - to confidently apply AI, as well as know where it should be avoided.
