The first event of Service Design Network Greece

On Friday, April 5th 2019, at the always welcoming venue of BOX Athens we were pleased to hold the first event of Service Design Network Greece. After a long time of envisioning and planning by the founding team, the event was embraced with enthusiasm by the Greek design community. The passion and eagerness shown in shaping this community was a great surprise and a big motivation to continue this initiative towards establishing the practice of Service Design in Greece.

We aim to create a cohesive community of service design professionals, academics and students that are collectively committed to advancing the practise and establish the Service Design discipline in Greece.

For the the first phase of the birth of SDNGreece, the founding team has set the following goals:

  • Communicate the principles and methods of service design in the Greek market.
  • Create a community to exchange knowledge and good practices.
  • Connect the community to the global Service Design Network.
  • Understand the needs of the Greek market by sector and implement service design to fulfil them.

The event kicked off with a brief presentation given by the founding members regarding the reasons and the vision behind the creation of SDNGreece, as well as an introduction to the Service Design Network and the values of Service Design. Appreciating that Service Design is a participatory process and that a community to be formed requires the collective participation of all its members, all attendees were asked to go through two simple exercises aimed at informing the future actions of SDNGreece. The audience formed 4 groups based on their backgrounds - a group of non-designers, a group of in-house designers and two groups of agency designers.

The aim of the first exercise was to understand the current context of the Greek design community by mapping out problems and opportunities. Then, in the second exercise the audience was asked to identify what actions they would like the SDNGreece to do.

The event closed with drinks and networking.

We would like to thank all those who honoured us with their presence at BOX Athens, your participation and excitement surprised us positively and gave us even more energy as it showed us that there is a need for even better and stronger service design in Greece. Also, we thank BOX Athens for its hospitality.
