A Service Design Day Talk: Post-COVID 19 and the Future of Society

Featuring Jesse Grimes (SDN Vice President, Touchpoint Editor-in-Chief and independent service designer at kolmiot.com) and Mark Vanderbeeken (CEO and Founding Partner at Experientia)

As the world continues to grapple with the effects that the COVID-19 virus has unleashed worldwide upon global communities, economies and social networks, the need to rethink how we operate as a society has never been greater. Accordingly, this year’s Service Design Day event (June 1, 2020) will take place under the theme "Do Good - Give Back" (first launched in 2019) and will look to bring attention to the practice of service design and the value it offers through the lens of these uncertain times.  Practitioners, students, agencies and academics across the globe are being asked to join us—virtually—in celebration of this day by showcasing (online) the efforts they are taking to make the world a better place, through better services.

Post COVID-19 Action Plan

Mark Vanderbeeken, CEO of Experientia is passionate about getting beyond conversation around COVID-19 and moving into real action. He has consequently, developed a “Post-COVID-19  action project” as a means to engage fellow members of the service design community to come together to map out potential scenarios as we move ahead toward a brighter future. His ideas go beyond the economic implications of COVID-19 but look to dive into the environmental, social, psychological and political forces also at play. As part of our Service Design Day line-up, we have invited Mark for a sit down with SDN Vice President Jesse Grimes to discuss the project and his next steps towards creating tangible plans, participants and partners. Join them on June 1 to learn more about the project and how you can get involved.

This conversation will take place over Zoom

Touchpoint 15-3 Call for Papers is now open: “Designing from Within”

As the practice of service design continues to gain recognition and traction, a notable trend has emerged: organisations are choosing to build and utilise in-house service design teams rather than relying on external agencies. This shift brings with it a host of considerations, both positive and negative, that merit in-depth exploration and critical reflection.
