“An Introduction to Service Design Through Journey Mapping” Takes the SDN’s New South African Chapter on an Educational Voyage

The SDN's SVP and SDN Academy co-founder/Head of Training Jesse Grimes (Kolmiot Service Design) conducts an “An Introduction to Service Design Through Journey Mapping” course for the new South Africa Chapter.

The Service Design Network recently announced the addition of South Africa to our chapter network and are pleased to welcome a community so intensely invested in raising awareness on the value of service design across the private and public sectors. In seeking to add value to its launch activities, the South Africa Chapter turned their commitment to education into an invitation to the SDN SVP and SDN Academy co-founder/Head of Training Jesse Grimes (Kolmiot Service Design), to hold an “An Introduction to Service Design Through Journey Mapping” course in Johannesburg.

Geared towards new practitioners as well as current service designers looking to up-skill, this immersive training introduced not only the all-important journey map but also how it can be the backbone of a service design approach.

The course took place on 19-20 September at Fjord/Accenture Interactive in Johannesburg, a global agency committed to helping brands transform the customer experience. Jesse taught a group of ten participants, who sought to enhance their understanding of service design, as well as get hands-on experience applying journey mapping to a real-world case.

On the evening of 19 September, the SDN South Africa Chapter held the second of its two launch events, the first being held two weeks earlier in Cape Town. Jesse joined several local speakers in giving presentations to a local audience interested in service design.

As the practice of service design continues to gain recognition and traction, a notable trend has emerged: organisations are choosing to build and utilise in-house service design teams rather than relying on external agencies. Service designers work within a unique context. Because our work influences service innovation, improvement and delivery across lengthy and often complex customer lifecycles, we must work closely with stakeholders from across our organisations, and even beyond.
