In recent years, both business and government have learned—sometimes the hard way—that events affecting their day-to-day existence are fraught with risk: operational risk, development risk, and reputational risk, to name a few. The best firms can balance the need for return on investment with mitigation strategies that enhance the chance of success. Consequently, Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) has grown quickly from a nascent business practice to a full-fledged business discipline that has become a key element of good business management.
Essential to growth in the modern era, Innovation and Service Design can present much risk to an organization. However, the good news is that the design process itself has many built-in mechanisms to mitigate risk such as understanding users, reframing problems, prototyping and testing, and iterating concepts before major investments are made—decreasing exposure while also improving quality and speed.
But, do each know of the other’s existence as a mutually reinforcing business practices? Can strong links be made that suggest that ERM enthusiasts should also embrace the design process and vice versa? If so, then we open up an entire new category of value creation that has yet to be widely explored.
Our SDN DC chapter in collaboration with SDN Academy will host this discussion which will explore the intersection of ERM and Innovation/Service Design. Associate Professor at St. John's University and an SDN Accredited Master Trainer, Dr. Joan Ball, renowned professor Dr. Paul Walker from St. John’s University, and Deloitte Specialist Leader, Anthony Fratta, will help us understand ERM and its connection to Innovation/Service Design in the first part of this session. This will set the stage for several local practitioners across industries to then discuss how they have applied risk management through their Innovation/Service Design work.
