Swinburne School of Design

Swinburne’s School of Design is recognized as one of Australia’s leading institutions for design education, practice and research. The School offers three and four-year courses at Undergraduate level, as well as Masters, and a highly regarded Professional Doctorate and PhD program.  Our courses encourage specialization, cross-disciplinary collaboration and international study experiences, which prepare our students for global design careers. Disciplines include Industrial Design, Interior Architecture, Communication Design, Digital Media Design, Design Anthropology, Design Strategy, Service Design, Innovation and Design, and Branded Environments.  The School has deep connections with the Australian Design Industry and has run its Industry Placement program for over 40 years, giving students the opportunities to gain experience in leading design studios and design-led organisations.

Swinburne Design Factory

Swinburne Design Factory is part of the Global Design Factory Network (www.gdfn.org) – a group of leading universities around the world offering innovative education, research and partnerships. It brings together undergraduate and postgraduate students, industry and researchers to co-create extraordinary results. At Swinburne Design Factory, students from a range of disciplines — including business, engineering, technology and design — have the opportunity to work on semester or year-long projects with industry partners, both locally and internationally.

Centre for Design Innovation

The Centre for Design Innovation (CDI) is our research centre focused on the outputs and impacts of design-related research in areas including health and the future-self across the lifespan, service and strategic design, human-product experience design and design for public good. CDI supports research in the following areas:

Strategic Design – design methods and processes in the innovation eco-system
Transformative Design – design, human behaviour and interaction research with a particular emphasis on health, wellbeing, social good and ageing.
Design Aesthetics – sensory measurement and cognitive decision-making
Productive design – design-led manufacturing and product development

CDI exists to provide access to a strong, client-focused research capability, while nurturing and building Doctorate design students from around the globe, from a range of different design disciplines. The combination of our coursework and research courses nurtures our graduates to be leaders in strategic and meaningful design innovation.
