Untapped visual media in service design and design research

Explore how to use photography and film for empathic research in service design, combining the art of visual storytelling with the latest technologies.

In this masterclass you will learn techniques drawn from photographers and filmmakers to create engaging visual stories, enabling colleagues and clients to ‘step into another’s shoes.’ We’ll begin by familiarising ourselves through a practical handson assignment, focusing on how to effectively communicate and share experiences visually in a powerful way. We will then give an overview to new technologies available for capturing still and moving images, letting you explore yourself how to use these for visual storytelling, and considering how to edit, select, and share this visual media to open up new possibilities for design research. We will conclude with a discussion on our explorations, focusing on how to incorporate these visual techniques and approaches in your daytoday practice. This Masterclass builds on Viewfinders, STBY’s latest book on visual design research, focusing on the untapped potential of visual media in service design and design research. All participants will receive a copy of Viewfinders for reference and further inspiration. Participants should bring their own laptop and if desired their own cameras they’d like to experiment with (e.g. GoPro, Narrative Clip or Smartphone).

INFORMAAT

Content Journeys

Learn how to apply content strategy to customer journeys, enriching one of the best-known service design deliverables with critically important new layers.

Customers expect today’s services to provide a continuous experience across channels and touchpoints. Content plays a crucial role in accomplishing this goal. It needs to be consistent no matter what channel it is conveyed in. Content strategy helps to achieve this consistency, yet is often overlooked in service design engagements. This masterclass will teach you how service design projects can benefit from the application of elements of content strategy, and will give hands-on experience on how content journeys fulfil that role. In this masterclass format, facilitators will build on an already successful workshop given several times in the Netherlands, giving more hands-on experience to attendees, in a more intimate setting.

Touchpoint Vol. 14 No.3 | Implementing Service Design is out!

On 8 January 2024, after more than six years of meticulous planning, development and testing, Astrobotic Technology launched their Peregrine lunar lander into space, with the aim of being the first American spacecraft to land on the moon since 1972. Seven hours after launch, a propellant leak was discovered, and the difficult decision was made to abandon the mission and allow Peregrine to burn up upon re-entry to Earth’s atmosphere. One week ago, a follow-up mission from Intuitive Machines did succeed in landing Odysseus on the moon’s surface. But in what was later attributed to both cutting corners and forgetting to unlock a laser’s physical safety switch, Odysseus touched down on its side, hampering its solar panels and communications, and causing the mission to be aborted.
