Fiona MacLellan Scottish Government, Service Design Lead

Fiona J. MacLellan has studies at Glasgow School of Art, Köln International School of Design and ENSCI, Les Atelier, Paris. At present she is based at Scottish Government as a Lead Service Designer within the Digital Directorate, working on the Payments Programme and Digital Identity. Fiona's approach is user-centred and futures-focused and she hope to introduce and embed Participatory Futures and Speculative Design into the Scottish Government's ways of working.

Working with design agencies Fiona developed the strategy and design research for large scale clients such as the new digital banking service ‘B’ (Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank). Moving to the public sector, she followed her interests in participatory design working with Skills Development Scotland as part of their Service Design and Innovation team. More recently, she joined the Scottish Parliament’s think-tank ‘Scotland’s Futures Forum,’ a group of futurologists coming together to build an aspirational picture for Scotland in 2030.

Supervised by Dr Gordon Hush, Fiona's PhD research explores the digital and non-digital aspects of remote schooling, and provides a methodological contribution to the field of Service Design. Beyond academic contributions, the research is concerned with equity in the delivery of services across society. She is happy to talk (at great lengths) about this, just get in touch!

Outside of work you will find Fiona with her two wee ones or on a bike. She is also proud to say she has worked closely with Glasgow Women's Aid, setting up a Creative Collective, and singing in Glasgow School of Art's choir. Last to add, but most close to Fiona's heart, she has a particular interest in supporting the fight against domestic abuse and educational projects that promote gender equality. Please send Fiona an email if you would like to set up a chat: fiona.maclellan@gov.scot
