視障者友善就醫方案

Hualien Mennonite Hospital, established in 1954, is an important health care resource in eastern Taiwan. Due to the regional development gap, most young people migrate out of Hualien. Thus patients today of Hualien Mennonite hospital are the elder, the physically challenged, and mothers with children, all of them are suffered from limited mobility. Therefore, Mennonite Hospital had collaborated with 5% Design Action and BenQ, together we designed a number of prototypes to improve the patient's overall experience.

"Seeing a doctor" is a common situation in our daily life, but for the visually impaired, in addition to the uncomfortable illness, seeing a doctor may become a challenge.
Thus we would like to help the visually impaired to find the right direction in the hospital through some design improvement.

Through field observations, interviews and the co-create workshop with hospital workers and patients,
we concluded key problems of the patient experience for the visually impaired:
1.      It’s hard to find the correct clinic room without any assistance.
2.      Once they go to the toilet, they could hardly find the way back to the waiting room.
3.      They need someone to separate the drugs into different dosages in the pill box first. Only in this way can they take the medicine correctly.

Base on the research, we created several prototypes such as visually impaired assistance guideline for hospital volunteers, voice instruction app with indoor positioning system and pill bag with voice instruction QR code.
We shared the solutions with Mennonite hospital, and they will continue to cooperate with 5% Design Action to make these concepts be gradually implemented to improve the patient experience for the visually impaired.
