Service Design – New Perspectives for Contemporary Design Practice

Service design is not yet a clearly defined discipline, nor are there clearly defined tasks that are very specific to service design. Rather, Service Design is an excellent framework that provides all designers with efficient tools and methods – and not least with an extended idea of what designing could mean – to meet the increasingly complex problems within a rapidly changing world with design solutions for people.

From this point of view, the service design approach opens up new perspectives for ALL designers in their design approach - and this in relation to ALL conceivable projects within Richard Buchanan's "Four Orders of Design" – from symbolic and visual communication to complex systems, environments and organizations.

In lectures, discussions and by means of student projects elaborated at the Master Design and BA Design Management International at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts we will explore the influence of service design in its various facets – especially its role as a framework within and across various disciplines and projects of different scale.

The event is tailored to design students (BA & MA), design professionals and companies who are interested in service design and would like to grow in this direction.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Andy Polaine, PhD, Group Director at Fjord Client Evolution, author of several articles and co-author of the book, Service Design: From Insight to Implementation.

Jan-Christoph Zoels is a founding partner of Experientia, focusing on people’s service experiences to support sustainable lifestyles.

Sabine Junginger, PhD, author of several articles and books around design management, is Head of the Competence Center for Research in Design and Management at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

Vinzenz Leuenberger, Open Innovation Developer at Swisscom, Product Owner and Designer at Swisscom Kickbox.

The goal of the Master Design in Lucerne is to forge the next generation of Designers who – more than ever – are requested as leaders in cross sector innovation. An expanding occupational field in Design, which mainly will be characterized by the collaboration between different disciplines – all together addressing social, technological, ecologic and economic issues and putting humans first and at the centre of the Design Intervention.
