Can Speculative Design create value in today's Service Design projects

2021's first SDN UK (Virtual) meet up

Beyond Black Mirror and on to the Future of Fried Chicken.....

Over 80 designers, design students and academics tuned in for the UK's first meet up. Speculative Design was once only really talked about in academia, however, in recent times organizations have looked to this discipline as a way to explore contemporary design problems.

In this session three speakers set out how they had applied Speculative Design approaches to Service Design to solve some wicked problems, that used Speculative Design to deliver real services and outcomes....

Speculative Design beyond Black Mirror For the outsider eye, speculative design seems to be about emerging technology, AI, new interfaces, and provocative global scenarios ridden with calamity. But what is speculative design really when taken out of the context of art and props, and into the real world? In this talk Tatiana highlights what speculative can be beyond the images of Black Mirror & Star Trek and looks at ways to help businesses, governments, and non profits make better decisions, and use design leadership to innovate in spaces for the common good. We discuss speculative design tools and methods in practice, how to perform informative trends research, and reference more humane visions of the near future.

Wareesa's session will comprise a presentation of the provocation designed to open up a conversation and raise awareness towards the future of food reflecting our social issues through the chicken shop in 2031, some responses from the audience and how it can be applied to service design.

Future focused Innovation. Disruption has never been more prevalent than today. While corporations are struggling to find new growth, most new market changing innovations originate through new players; think Uber, Airbnb, Revolut. But of course it doesn't have to be that way. Armed with business design principles and a data driven approach to innovation, corporations are already starting to leverage their unfair competitive advantage to launch new business models and drive growth. Ben will give you an overview of how this can be achieved with both successful and unsuccessful real world examples. Join him when he's laying the groundwork for successful corporate innovation.
