I think mathematical modelling is very similar to understanding human behaviour; models show how logic is misleading when you apply a simple behaviour at scale. Service design's biggest challenge is taking what are often individual journeys on to a large scale platform where the unexpected consequences of success occur (one car is freedom and a quality life outside the city, a million cars is traffic jams and the suburban sprawl).
