Part 1: Sustainability is a people problem, and we can solve it

Tuesday, June 28, 2022

12 pm Central Daylight Time (CDT) / 7 pm Central European Summer Time (CEST)

Do you wonder what concrete contributions designers can bring to the global challenges we face? In this talk, Joost van Leeuwen will show how we can use our tools and skills to tackle problems beyond "Customer Experience."

We'll consider the core of the sustainability problem, resistance to change, and how Joost's process of using empathy, facilitation, visualization, and prototyping creates progress. He will also share a case study about a project that made the circular economy concrete and actionable at the Dutch Municipality of Apeldoorn.

For more information ahead of the talk, you can find Joost's recently published white paper on service design for a circular economy at www.servicedesignforsustainability.com.

About the Speaker

Joost van Leeuwen — Sustainability Lead, Koos Service Design

Joost focuses his service design efforts on ways to accelerate the transition to a sustainable society. He believes tackling climate change is not a technology problem, but a people problem. A problem which service design is in a unique position to address. As Sustainability Lead and Senior Consultant at Koos Service Design, he has a range of circular and sustainability projects under his belt, both in the private and public sector - including closing the loop for material streams at Dutch municipalities. Also, when winding down, Joost can be found moving weights at the gym or annoying his neighbours learning a new guitar riff.

Be sure to also look out for the next parts of our Sustainability series — coming soon!
