:-) seriously, we could just set up thematic spaces (think "theme park") where people could present projects, work together, hold their presentations informally. in short: do everything, you would do on a break.

lets be honest: who is REALLY watching the talks at an academic conference? you read up on the stuff anyway and only listen to ask / challenge the speaker.

I suffer from conference-itis: its an allergy caused by too much sitting and listening, too much coffee, and too little variety in activity. Symptoms range from information overload or nail-biting boredom. I worry that so many conference follow the same-old format where delivering 'papers' take central stage and not enough activities are considered that foster discussion. How often have we experienced 'there is little time left for discussion' because a number of presenters in your panel over-ran their slot by 3 to 4 minutes?

In an attempt to break this cycle, I was involved in organising a symposium that challenged many conventions and focussed on facilitating dialogue. Undoubtedly, this freaked many attendees out, but I also observed that the majority gained a great deal from it. Participants were asked to submit an abstract or proposition of a 'thing' they wanted to discuss. These could be ideas for a project, critical reflection, insights from case studies, a thread in a PhD topic, problems observed with working with clients etc etc - and the usual peer-review process was undertaken to ensure that there was clarity and quality. Once the participants were selected, they could elect to be in one of five different themes, which they would belong to during the symposium. These themes were selected by the symposium organiser after canvassing the range of proposal they received. Over the 3 day symposium, participants were encouraged to share their proposals/abstracts within their own clusters and undertake certain tasks. These tasks included:
- highlight common patterns, challenges, insights
- visualise this finding and propose a 'vision' of what could be done next
- report back to the whole group (ie, the rest of the other clusters) on Day 3 of the symposium.

Within these clusters, there were facilitators, note-takers and documenters among them, to ensure that the interaction and dialogue was productive and recorded.

Obviously, being the first time this style of syposium was organised, there were a few issues that need addressing, but that aside, what was really great about this model was that it really got people interacting and talking. The emphasis wasn't on the individual, but on collective. Some really great ideas and insights had come out of over the 3 days, and it also accelerated networking and relationship building because of the speed and deadlines set upon each cluster.

I think the 'theme' based clustering would really work for service design, particularly if you could make it context specific eg. 'health' or 'education' or 'environment', etc. I am also in favour of separating corporate and public projects because the mixing of the two can dilute objectives and agendas, which doesn't actually help anyone examine things more critically. What you want is for these themes to be catered very specifically so it is able to accelerate the conversations, rather than dilute them. That is the design challenge of a conference.

Firstly, can someone from SDN provide a comprehensive brief for us to respond to. The wording at the top of the page does not give enough information.
There would seem to be scope to have the conference developed around the present and the future not just the future. Having professionals/academics/students is to big a segment and probably needs to be separated out, but I would question the value of having a separation at all. Why not have a market place with stall holders. The market place could have themes/practice segments as already suggested and could run workshops at each market area on their appropriate subject.
I agree with Peter's comments above, the value in open space is very high. Content should act as a catalyst not as an end in itself.
There would seem to be value in exploring things like developing a professional practice, selling service design at a strategic level, identifying where service design borders other practices such as OD, Operations and Marketing.
Students should be charged a discounted rate for conference tickets and in return they could act as facilitators, reporters/recorders, hosts and/or share their work.
Things like pannel discussions always work well. They difficult to facilitate well but my experience is they generate a lot more than simple presentations. Similarly diverse groups working on real world problems during the conference then feeding back to others is of critical value. What about getting a charity like Medicine Sans Frontiers to provide a senior person to state a problem, develop a brief and have diverse groups work on that. Or someone from a brand to do the same (though this is giving free consultancy). But it brings the real world with present challenges into focus. Too much future orientation will lose value for the delegates, although future focus is a designers want.

Overall, it would seem approapriate to move away from talking about tools, techniques and approaches and focussing on how service design and design thinking DELIVER benefits and what benefits they do deliver. Moving away from our professional features to professional benefits to clients seems really important.
