Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts

Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts – School of Art and Design is the oldest art and design school in Switzerland, with a history reaching back more than 130 years. The courses are unique in the country, covering Textile Design, Illustration, Animation and Design Management, International. Another first for Switzerland is the exceptional combination of art and art teaching. The School of Art and Design features two separate faculties – Art and Design – providing excellent facilities for both research and learning, and further education and services for external patrons.

Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts – School of Art and Design allows students to acquire expertise to prepare for a challenging and professional environment, thanks to a wide national and international network of lecturers, students and projects. Twenty well-equipped onsite workshops enable students to put their skills into practice.

Service design forms part of the University’s diverse curriculum. As an element of the bachelor’s degree in Design Management, International students learn how to initiate, manage and advance design-led projects through design thinking. Apart from corporate design and product design tasks, these projects increasingly include service design. During an initial theory week, students take multidisciplinary modules to familiarise themselves with the foundations of service design. Their findings are then applied, for example, as part of a campus canteen redesign.

From September 2009, the School of Art and Design will offer comprehensive qualifications in service design as part of an MA in Design. Major Product Design & Management students can choose between Textiles and Products, or Services, as their main subject. They will also be able to develop their own projects in these disciplines. The close relationship between master’s degree students and research is set to generate new insights into service design as a result of these unique projects.

The R&D department discusses how, for example, service innovation can be rendered more attractive through elements of story telling. Another area of research considers the development of a visualisation instrument based on well-established blueprints which allow specific areas of service design (e.g. interaction, customer experience etc.) to be taken into greater account during planning, organisation and evaluation.
